Southampton defender Lyanco is now in Brazil to complete his transfer to Atlético Mineiro.
The centre-back landed in Belo Horizonte, and even had a quick chat with journalists about his move.
“Now we have some things to sort out, then we’ll celebrate. I’ll explain that (about choosing Atlético) later. Very (happy), for sure. I’ll tell you more about it later,” said Lyanco (via Globo Esporte).
Southampton spent €7.5m to sign Lyanco from Torino back in 2021. He spent a couple of seasons playing for the Saints, with 49 appearances in total. Last summer, he was sent to Al-Gharafa SC on a season-long loan deal.
According to the Brazilian media, the Qatari side had interest in making his move permanent, but it was the player himself who decided it was time to move back to Brazil.
Atlético were the first to move to get him and soon secured a verbal agreement with the player. Those early talks were crucial for them, because Botafogo showed up offering more money, but the defender kept his word and is now expected to sign a contract soon.
Globo Esporte report that Atlético are initially paying €3m for 50% of the player’s rights, with that amount split into three instalments.
There are some performance goals to be reached, and in case they are, then there’ll be another €1.5m payment for 25% more of his rights. That would take it to 75%, and all it essentially means is that Southampton get 25% from a future transfer, or 50% if those goals aren’t reached.
