Belgian legend Philippe Albert believes it was surprising that nobody moved to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana in the summer transfer window.

The former defender has been speaking to La Capitale regarding the midfielder, who he believes is set for a big transfer before too long.

Onana joined Everton in last summer’s transfer window and established himself as a key player under Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche as the Toffees narrowly avoided relegation.

Despite a poor season for Everton his performances earned him a place in the Belgian national team, where he has also established him as a key player under Domenico Tedesco.

It led to reports in the January transfer window that clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United were keen on his signature, with the latter again showing an interest this summer as they looked to reshape Erik ten Hag’s midfield.

A transfer away from Everton did not happen as United and other potential suitors signed alternative options, with Chelsea spending big to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia instead.

That’s something which surprise Albert, who believes clubs would not have been spending poorly if they’d invested in the Everton man.

“Physically Amadaou is a monster and technically he also has quality,” he said.

“I am very surprised that no one paid his €85 million clause. When I see how easily Chelsea spend the money to buy anything and everything, I find it very strange that they don’t buy a player like Onana for less than 100 million euros.”
