Former Celtic goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas has bluntly insisted he won’t be recommending other players join Brendan Rodgers’ side, after his own miserable spell at the club.

The goalkeeper has been speaking to Voetbal International regarding his time at Celtic, which came to an end this summer.

He joined the Bhoys from AEK Athens in a €5m deal in July 2020 but would only make 24 appearances for the club, managing 11 cleans sheets.

He was largely considered a flop and thus sent out on loan to Utrecht last season, where he established himself as first choice and managed 12 cleans sheets in 38 games.

The move was turned into a permanent one in the summer, with him joining the Dutch side on a free transfer.

His time in Scotland will not be fondly remembered by either him or the fans, with many at the club considering him to be a major flop and more than open about saying so.

It seems that lack of affection is shared by Barkas, though, who admits he won’t be recommending Celtic to aanyone if they ask him.

“I didn’t feel like I was an important part of the team,” he said.

“But maybe it’s not even the team’s fault. It was a Covid year, everything was different. The first six months I didn’t know my teammates, we were in different dressing rooms.

“Celtic is a huge club, but I wouldn’t recommend a goalkeeper to come here.”
