New Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has hinted he could strip Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof of the captaincy and head in a different direction.
That’s according to Sport Bladet, who cover comments from the manager today and his potential plans for the Manchester United man.
Tomasson was announced as the new Sweden manager earlier this week after leaving his role at Blackburn Rovers last month.
He becomes the first non-Swedish man to manage the national team in what is set to be a period of change for the country moving forwards.
The hope is that Tomasson can usher in a new era for the national side, who have disappointed in recent years under Janne Andersson despite having a squad that is full of talent.
Tomasson has already identified his desire to create a national football identity and create an attacking team that he hopes can get fans on board quickly.
That will be just one of many changes that he has planned, and another could be the removal of Manchester United’s Lindelof as captain, with him having had the armband since August 2021.
“All the things like captain and how we are going to play, I will be very concrete about when we get a little further along,” he said.
“I first have to meet the players and after that I will be very concrete in my statements about what I think about the situation.
“First of all, (they need) to show leadership, that is the more important thing. The second is, and it applies to everyone, that you play with honour and are proud to play for the national team.
“I have heard from many in the organization that the Swedish players really love playing for Sweden. It’s very good, you need to have it and show it on the pitch.”
