In May, Daniele Longo reported Brentford were working towards signing Genoa’s Morten Frendrup, who was also attracting interest from Brighton.

Back in December as well, interest from the two clubs was reported and there was confidence that only €15m would be needed to sign the Dane.

Frendrup ended up staying at Genoa and has now spoken to Gazzetta dello Sport about his situation at the Italian club.

The 24-year-old midfielder was specifically asked about the summer transfer window, but he made it clear that rumours about clubs like Brentford and Brighton didn’t impact him.

“I wasn’t influenced by it. I’ve gotten used to the fact that similar situations can arise during transfer window periods. I’ve always remained focused and concentrated on Genoa.”

The Denmark international has now played 129 times for Genoa and he was asked about his growing influence at the club.

He said: “My football is built, first and foremost, on three key concepts: being able to play, feeling good, and being happy. Nothing else. That’s why today I can confirm that I’m very satisfied with my experience at Genoa.

“Me as a leader? I’ll tell you this: there are many in the team, and in any case, you’re not necessarily a leader just because you’ve played a lot of games.”

Frendrup does come across as very focused and determined in the interview, which is fitting of his approach on the pitch too.

His profile has been growing in Serie A over the last year or so and with that, his valuation should also increase.

Brighton and Brentford had a good chance to land him for a cheap fee in the summer, but that opportunity may have now passed.
