Raul Jimenez wants to stay at Wolves, but he’s under no illusion about the price on his head and knows the club, or anyone else interested, will have to pay €38m this summer to complete a transfer.
Benfica had long planned to make a big profit from the sale of the Mexican, and at times that seemed a farcical proposition.
They’d once been offered more than €40m by a Chinese club. After Jimenez turned it down, they became doubly determined to make sure that value was hit with a future transfer.
Given the striker wasn’t getting games in Lisbon, and wasn’t scoring enough when he did, no club was going to part with €40m.
Wolves agreed to a €3m loan deal with a clause allowing them to complete the transfer for €38m in the next window.
Speaking to Marca Claro, and picked up by A Bola, Jimenez has made it clear he’s happy where he is: “I’d like to stay at the Wolves. I’m very happy. A major project was created at Wolverhampton. It’s not normal for a newly promoted Premier League team to be fighting for a place in the Europa League.”
On the €38m, he said: “It was the clause that Benfica decided and that is what any team who wants me will have to pay.”
Jimenez added that now he has to justify that price tag with his performances on the pitch.
