Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville has really opened up with the Dutch media this week.
The 21-year-old was interviewed by Voetbal International (via 1908.nl), and started the conversation speaking about his move from Feyenoord to the Whites in 2020.
Summerville was switching academies and leaving his country for the first time. He claims he wasn’t even sure about joining Leeds United at first, especially because he wasn’t even prepared to speak English.
“I must say that I had my doubts when I had to make the choice. Because yes, it is a big step. And it really was. I’m a boy from South Rotterdam, a boy from the street. I hardly spoke English and then you go abroad when you are eighteen,” Summerville told Voetbal International.
Regarding his arrival at Leeds, the player recalls that he had heavy struggles in his first few months at the club, and even wanted to go back to the Netherlands at one stage. He says that the place where he first stayed didn’t help with the situation either.
“Nobody actually knows this yet, but I want to be honest: the first six months I had a very difficult time. At that time I called my agent almost every day. I said I wanted to go back to the Netherlands, that I didn’t like it. I said, I just don’t want this. I want to go home.”
“I missed my people. Family, friends. I was there all alone. Not even in an apartment. The first weeks I slept in a hotel! Training and then back to that hotel room. And as I said: my English was not good.”
In the same interview, Summerville also spoke about a potential departure from Leeds this summer.
Following rumours saying that Aston Villa, Borussia Dortmund and Feyenoord are all interested in signing him, he claimed he still doesn’t know if he’s leaving the Elland Road, and is trying to keep himself away from the market whispers.
