With João Neves having a great season at Benfica, he’s been heavily linked with an exit from the club this summer, with Manchester United reportedly making an offer.

It turns out that Manchester City star Bernardo Silva doesn’t want that to happen, and would like to have the midfielder on the Blue side of the city instead.

That was said by him in a press conference with the Portuguese media today, in quotes covered by O Jogo.

Silva was asked about Manchester United’s interest in João Neves, and explained he’d like him at Manchester City.

“I’d tell him to go to Manchester City. It’s not easy. He’s a player who, given his success last season, has many clubs wanting him. As a Portuguese and a player I like, I’d like to see him alongside me. But I want the best for him,” said Bernardo Silva.

“Guardiola? I don’t need to convince him. João Neves is already convincing because of the way he works and the energy he brings to the game. He won’t be a cheap player, it won’t be easy for many clubs to get in on the act. Let him make his decision, let it be what’s best for him. If he keeps up this energy, he has a very good future ahead of him.”

Reports from the Portuguese media this week claimed that Manchester United placed a €60m bid for João Neves, but that was immediately rejected by Benfica. The word in Lisbon is that the Eagles are not letting him go this summer unless someone pays his €120m release clause, although there have been some reports suggesting €100m could be enough.

Manchester City haven’t been heavily linked to him lately, but since he’s shown a lot of quality, that isn’t a chase which would surprise anyone.
