In the past few days, we’ve all seen the drama lived by Sheffield United winger Ben Brereton Diaz in his international career.
The striker, who chose to play for Chile, was first not called up by Ricardo Gareca because he can’t speak Spanish. Then due to the need of a new attacker in the squad, he ended up getting called up.
That’s undoubtedly an uncomfortable situation for the Brereton, and as D13 today covers some quotes from Chile fullback Gabriel Suazo, we can have an idea of how he’s been treated at the national team.
The Toulouse player claimed he’s been taking care of the Sheffield United striker, as they’ve been helping each other learn a new language.
“I speak to him in English and he speaks to me in Spanish,” said Suazo.
“For me it is much more important to communicate with my colleagues. I have been here for four or five months and I have improved my English a lot, it is something that makes me proud.”
Brereton already has 27 appearances for Chile, and now needs to convince Gareca he deserves a place in the squad which will play the Copa America.
His season with Sheffield United seems to have been enough for it, so this is a good opportunity to show he’s trying to learn Spanish and get some trust from the manager.
