About a month ago, Lionel Messi said Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is the best centre-back in the world.
That was quite a big statement from the Inter Miami star, even though their friendship at the Argentine national team certainly played a part.
It turns out that Romero now gets some great comments from Napoli star Victor Osimhen as well. Those were made on TVPlay, and relayed by Il Messaggero.
The striker was asked about the most difficult defenders he’s played against, and the Tottenham player was the first to get a mention.
“I mention two names. One is Romero who is now at Tottenham. I remember his speed when he was at Atalanta,” said Osimhen.
“I was also impressed by Smalling.”
Tottenham made a big investment when signing Romero from Atalanta. They first got him on loan in 2021 and made the transfer permanent in the following year for €50m.
That price seems to have paid off, though, as the player not only proved himself in the Premier League, but also in the national team, where he played in Argentina’s matches in their World Cup winning campaign last year.
He’s now valued by Transfermarkt at €60m, but it’s unlikely he’s going anywhere.
