Unable to find space in Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham, Harry Winks was sent on loan for the season to Sampdoria.
The aim was for him to play a full campaign, but that was quickly scuppered by an ankle injury that eventually needed surgery.
He has since recovered and returned to the Sampdoria squad, but the Tottenham midfielder missed a very large part of the season, and found a team struggling for form, as they currently sit rock bottom of Serie A, in grave danger of being relegated.
Whether they can turn the 12 points deficit around in the next 12 games remains to be seen, but there is one certainty in all this, and that’s the affection Winks has developed for the Italian club during his time there.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, the midfielder made it clear he owes a lot to the Genoa-based team, who always believed in him and did everything they could to ensure he returned as swiftly as possible.
In fact, his first words of the interview are: “I feel indebted to Sampdoria.”
He then goes on to describe how he feels about the club: “I have regret, first of all because the club has always remained by my side and has always given me support, on and off the pitch. It was important to allow me to solve the problems with my ankle. There are fantastic people here, as are the fans, with a strong sense of belonging.
“I can only be grateful to the club. There have been many changes in the workforce since September, but there has never been a lack of support among us.”
Since making his first appearance for Sampdoria in a 1-0 loss to Empoli on January 16th, the Tottenham man has started and finished every single league game they have played.
