João Gomes has been reflecting on an important week at Wolverhampton Wanderers, speaking to Globo Esporte about wearing the captain’s armband and providing a decisive assist. The Brazilian midfielder highlighted both moments as symbols of his growing influence at Molineux.

The 24-year-old came off the bench against Everton in the League Cup on Tuesday and, within six minutes, set up Arokodare for a stunning strike that sealed a 2-0 win. It was a contribution that arrived at a key time for Wolves, who have struggled in the Premier League and sit bottom of the table.

Gomes stressed in the interview that the victory could help change the mood inside the dressing room: “It was a fundamental win for the continuity of our work this season. We qualified against a big team after a great collective performance”

He shared his hopes of extending their winning joy to the league fixtures: “Hopefully we can take this as an example into our next Premier League games. We have confidence in our work and we’re certain that we’ll find the path to victories. The group has suffered some changes and that weighs at the start of the season. We’re working to help all the new players feel comfortable,” he explained.

Gomes also made headlines at the weekend when Vítor Pereira handed him the armband late in the match against Leeds. The midfielder admitted that the gesture carried weight for him personally. “I receive a lot of affection here at Wolves, from the fans, the staff and everyone at the club. I always try to give my best, whether in training or in games. By dedicating myself, I know I’m closer to delivering my best. Receiving the captain’s armband was a source of pride and a big responsibility,” he said.

He went on to underline his development since leaving Flamengo for Wolves at the start of 2023. “I’ve evolved a lot in the Premier League and I’m sure I still have room to grow,” he pointed out. The midfielder has now racked up 96 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and providing four assists, numbers that reflect his status as one of the pillars of the current squad.

While Wolves continue to search for their first league win of the season, Gomes’ words suggest he is ready to take on more responsibility on and off the pitch. His progress underlines why he is increasingly seen as a leader inside the Molineux dressing room.
