In need of a new defender with both Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez injured, Liverpool have been linked with a number of centre-backs ahead of the January transfer window.

The Reds have yet to make a decision, and there’s always the possibility of Jürgen Klopp deciding against a purchase altogether, but that will never stop players from being linked.

Among those is Cagliari’s Sebastian Walukiewicz, who has also been touted as being of interest to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.

While the Blues, having brought in Malang Sarr on a free as well as Thiago Silva in the summer, are a bit more comfortable in the position going forward than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s club, it wouldn’t be the first time they bought a player for the future, having done so multiple times in the past.

At just 20 years of age, Walukiewicz still has a lot of time on his side, which is why other clubs outside of the Premier League are also circling, perhaps seeing themselves as the stepping stone for the talented defender.

This is according to Mateusz Borek, who told TV program “Misja Futbol Dogrywka” in Poland, relayed by Zestadionu, about the Cagliari man’s situation.

He said: “About Sebastian Walukiewicz, I often talk to Tomasz Suwary, who, together with his Italian partners, leads the player. Walukiewicz went to the defenders factory, to Cagliari. There he learned to defend, he learned different systems.

“There are several directions. England awakens the imaginations of fans. Big clubs such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. I am not saying that Walukiewicz is ready to play at this level. The policy of these clubs is as follows: we buy potential and loan it out so that the player can develop.

“The second direction is the great Italian clubs. There was a serious enquiry from Inter. The third is very interesting. He found himself under the magnifying glass of Borussia Dortmund. If I could advise, I would point to this club, due to the fact that probably no club in Europe relies so boldly on young players”.

There could be an argument made for all three Premier League sides giving their chances to youth in recent years, with the likes of Mason Greenwood, Tammy Abraham and Trent Alexander-Arnold all succeeding at their respective clubs after being given a chance in the first-team.

However, there’s no denying that a team like Dortmund might be a better fit for someone like Walukiewicz at this point in his career.

Of course, that could all depend on whether or not Klopp, who has an eye for talent, decides to bolster his squad in the upcoming transfer window.
