Former Celtic defender Andreas Hinkel has revealed he would never have played for Rangers if given the chance. Hinkel spent three seasons at Celtic, and won the Scottish Cup in 2009 when the Hoops triumphed over their Glasgow rivals.

In an interview with 11freunde, Hinkel was asked about Celtic’s rivalry with Rangers, and their relegation to the 4th tier due to financial problems: “I would never have gone to Rangers. It had negative consequences for Celtic. I talked to Celtic officials about it. They told me that with the relegation of the Rangers money was lost.”

Rangers have now retained their status in the Scottish Premiership, and under the guidance of Pedro Caixinha the Ibrox club currently lie 3rd in the table. Carlos Pena scored two at the weekend, with Graham Dorrans adding another, as Caixinha’s men beat St Johnstone 3-0.

However, due to Rangers’ time in the lower leagues there’s now a gulf between the two Glasgow clubs, with Celtic already six points clear after nine games.

Caixinha will be looking to improve on last season’s position of 3rd, and if top scorer Alfredo Morelos continues to find the net then Rangers could achieve this.

With Celtic clear favourties to win the league, their Glasgow rivals could be fighting it out with the likes of Aberdeen and Motherwell for second place.
