Liverpool flop Oussama Assaidi has admitted he made a mistake joining the club and should have went to Ajax instead.

Assaidi spent a disappointing year at Liverpool from 2012 to 2013 after joining the Reds in a €4m deal from Heerenveen.

He arrived at Anfield with something of a growing reputation from the Netherlands, where he had also been on Ajax’s radar after scoring 22 and registering 25 assists for Heerenveen in 93 appearances.

He didn’t manage to get anywhere near that for Liverpool, though, managing just one assists in 12 appearances, before being shipped out on loan to Stoke City for two years.

He returned from the Potters in 2015 and was quickly sold to Al-Ahli in the United Arab Emirates in a €6m dal, bringing a swift end to a short and uninspiring spell on Merseyside.

It’s a period neither he nor Liverpool look back on with any fondness and he admits he made the wrong choice in joining the Reds.

“In training sessions, I could easily keep up,” he told ESPN.

“I turned those players completely crazy. Jamie Carragher, for example. Yes, really. In the Europa League I was Man of the Match twice, but in the Premier League I hardly got any minutes.

“How are you supposed to show it then? In hindsight, I should have made a better choice by going to Ajax first.”
