As Sevilla prepare to face Arsenal in the Champions League this week, one of their players has a special motivation for that match.
That’s Erik Lamela, who played for Tottenham Hotspur for eight years and knows the North London rivalry very well.
His time with Spurs is probably one of the reasons why he gave a press conference ahead of the European clash, and quoted by Marca, he talked about how special the game against Arsenal should be for him.
“Arsenal work very well as a team, being Premier League, physical and fast,” said Lamela.
“I always want to win. In the past I played for Tottenham and it means something to me. I love them very much. This game is special because of the rivalry, yes.”
Lamela left Tottenham for Sevilla in the summer of 2021. His record with Spurs was 37 goals and 45 assists in 256 appearances.
Sevilla had a poor start in the Champions League, with draws against Lens and PSV, and now need a good result against Arsenal to stay in the fight for a place in the knock-out stage.
The Gunners started well with a 4-0 win over PSV, but ended up losing 2-1 to Lens, and could use a win to stay well placed in Group B.
Now let’s see whether Lamela’s special motivation will give Tottenham fans a reason to celebrate.
