Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed he ‘decided to stay with Liverpool’ this summer despite numerous rumours about a move away from Anfield.
The Switzerland international has increasingly found himself on the periphery of Jürgen Klopp’s squad, managing just 11 appearances in all competitions last season.
He’s yet to feature properly this season either, with just the one appearance under his belt so far.
That’s led to numerous rumours that he could leave the Premier League champions this summer, particularly as Liverpool looked to balance the books during the Coronavirus pandemic.
That leaves Shaqiri fighting for a place in the Liverpool squad once more, one that he looks unlikely to win at this moment in time.
As far as he’s concerned, though, the decision to stay on Merseyside was his, and the numerous reports about him were nothing more than speculation.
“The media write a lot, but in the end I’m with Liverpool,” Thuner Tagblatt report him saying in a video posted by the Swiss FA.
“I have a long-term contract, and I really feel good. I have decided to stay with Liverpool. In football, there is always speculation.
“I think the national team comes at a good time to be able to play again and then attack again when I go back to Liverpool.”
