Tottenham have sold Djed Spence to Inter Milan and the player is delighted with his return to Serie A.
The Englishman didn’t have the smoothest of rides at Spurs. He joined the club in 2022 but soon found himself out of Antonio Conte’s plans. The Italian also infamously made it clear that the defender wasn’t his signing and this led to him being loaned out to Genoa and then to Rennes.
Spence took advantage of Tottenham’s injury crisis in the 2024/25 campaign. He established a spot for himself under Ange Postecoglou, winning the Europa League and was also a regular last season.
A good World Cup campaign helped his side, with Sport Witness covering how this led to a rise in his value.
The player has now opened up about the move to Inter, who have signed him permanently.
Transfer seen as a big step
The England international spoke to Inter’s official website about the deal. He made it clear that he feels like he is on the moon because of the transfer.
He said: “This is a great club and a big step for me and my family. I’m proud to be here, as if I were on the moon. I’m ready to start.”
Spence explained that his spells in Italy and France shaped him into what he is today.
“I think it shaped me a lot; you learn so much when you’re abroad. I became a man abroad: I’m grateful for these experiences.”
The 26-year-old also described himself as a risk-taker. He was asked about his performances at the World Cup and he revealed the intention to to carry forward his form.
“Definitely, I’m a player who likes to take risks, and you’ll see me that way at Inter too.”
Spence revealed that he wants to add more to his game from an attacking standpoint.
“My best qualities? My defensive ability, as well as my ability to carry the ball. What would I like to improve on? I’d like to add more goals and assists: if I could do that, I’d become an excellent player.”
Our take: Spence needs to capitalise on opportunity
This is the big move Spence wanted, especially after his journey in the last years.
At Inter, he could be a more than reliable squad player for Cristian Chivu. While he would mainly play at right wing-back, he will also allow Federico Dimarco to rest and feature at left wing-back.
This is a move which Inter really needed, as their wing-back areas were in uncertainty for the past few months. It is also a big opportunity for the ex-Tottenham player, who will compete for silverware regularly.
