Palermo midfielder Claudio Gomes has admitted he was ‘immediately convinced’ to leave Manchester City for the Italian club this summer.

The 22-year-old swapped the Etihad for the Palermo at the beginning of this month for an undisclosed fee, bringing an end to a three year stay with Manchester City.

He had originally joined the Citizens from Paris Saint German in 2018 after three years working his way through the French giant’s youth ranks.

He went on to make three appearances for Manchester City’s first team over the years, but managed just 22 minutes under Pep Guardiola, spending most of his time at the club playing for their youth teams or out on loan at PSV and Barnsley.

That is presumably why he decided to head to Italy this summer, hoping for regular playing time with the Serie B side, who recently joined the City Group, to continue his development.

It seems he didn’t have to think for too long about the move either, with negotiations happening quickly.

“The negotiation was quite rapid, it developed in the last days of the market,” he told Palermo Today.

“I had heard very positive things about this club, and I was immediately convinced. I also spoke with Enzo Maresca, he gave me some advice in Manchester before coming here, he knows this city very well.

“I want to have a good season, I have to make the team stronger in defence, but I also have to improve in the offensive phase.”
