Norwich City are once again seeing their Danish contingent draw attention, and this time it comes from inside the dressing room. Emiliano Marcondes has put the spotlight on teammate Pelle Mattsson, openly suggesting the midfielder may not be at Carrow Road for long.
The comments arrive at an interesting moment for the Canaries. Marcondes himself is already set to leave Norwich at the end of the season, with his contract expiring and no renewal agreed. That situation has brought some friction behind the scenes, and it adds extra weight to anything he says publicly about the squad.
Danish outlet Tipsbladet have now relayed his latest interview, where he backed Mattsson for a future move to a higher level.
Dressing room praise turns into transfer hint
Emiliano Marcondes spoke positively about both Pelle Mattsson and Mathias Kvistgaarden. However, it was Mattsson who drew the strongest endorsement.
“They have both done really well and settled into the culture and the team,” he said.
He then focused on Mattsson’s impact, highlighting his energy and intelligence off the ball.
“I didn’t know him that well from the Danish league, but he has really surprised me. He fits in very well. I was told he was good on the ball, but I actually think he is an even better pressing player.”
That praise quickly shifted towards transfer talk.
“Now I have to be careful what I say, but I think he can play at an even higher level, soon as well.”
Marcondes even suggested that interest may already be building.
“I think there must already be other clubs looking at him. That’s what I think when I watch him play.”
He added that Mattsson’s absence is noticeable when he does not feature, underlining his importance to Norwich.
Contract situation and what it means for Norwich
Pelle Mattsson only joined Norwich City last summer, and the club moved quickly to protect their position. He is under contract until 2028, with an option to extend until 2029.
That gives Norwich strong control over any potential transfer. However, public praise like this often fuels interest, especially when it comes from a teammate who has seen his level up close.
For Norwich, the timing is not ideal. Marcondes is already heading towards a free exit, and losing influence in the squad without a fee is never straightforward. His comments may unintentionally increase external attention on another asset.
At the same time, Mattsson’s performances appear to justify the noise. While Kvistgaarden has dealt with injuries, the midfielder has impressed with his pressing and consistency, traits that tend to translate well to higher levels.
What happens next
Emiliano Marcondes may be on his way out, but his words could have lasting consequences for Norwich City.
If interest in Pelle Mattsson grows, the club will face a familiar dilemma. They can hold firm thanks to a long contract, or they can consider a sale if offers reach the right level.
For now, there is no indication of formal bids. Still, when a teammate says he “has to be careful” before hinting at bigger clubs, it usually means the conversation has already started somewhere in the background.
Norwich will hope that conversation does not accelerate too quickly.
