Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has admitted he completely understood criticism coming his way before he opened his account for the Reds in the win over Everton.
The Dutch striker bagged the second of the game in last night’s 2-0 win over the Toffees at Anfield, breaking his duck since arriving on Merseyside at the beginning of January.
He was Liverpool’s only signing in the January transfer window, joining in a €42m deal from PSV Eindhoven, where had been shining since 2018.
Indeed, this season alone he had managed nine goals and 12 assists in 14 games in the Eredivisie and shined at the World Cup with the Netherlands, bagging three goals in the group stages in Qatar.
That goalscoring form had deserted him for the Reds, though, with him failing to score in any of his three Premier League and FA Cup appearances before the clash with Everton.
That led to plenty of criticism about the transfer, with many questioning why Liverpool had brought him in, something Gakpo admits he understood completely.
“Of course, as a striker, you always want to score and give assists,” he told Via Play, relayed by PSV Fans.
“In the end, though, it’s about winning and if that too doesn’t work out, then it’s tough. I have to be honest; I don’t really read it (criticism). I get it of course.
“That’s not so nice for any normal person, but you have to deal with that. I don’t think I get confused by that.
“I think I could have gone to Jürgen Klopp for that, but I didn’t. That was not necessary for me.”
