Newcastle United defender Fabian Schär’s immediate focus is on the upcoming Euros with Switzerland.
The 32-year-old was sidelined for over two weeks between the end of April and mid-May, and returned to action towards the end of the recently concluded season.
As quoted by Swiss newspaper Corriere del Ticino, the Newcastle player insists the national team camp are united ahead of the Euros.
The former FC Basel man has also stated that he’s well prepared to represent his country in Germany.
“I had a couple of days off to recharge my batteries at home and rest my mind and body. Now I feel at my best and happy to be here,” he said, as quoted by Corriere del Ticino.
“There are many of us, but we integrated easily and I find that being a united group is essential to ensure that our European Championship lasts as long as possible.”
When asked about the weather, which has been terrible in the region in recent weeks, Schär insisted it’s not an issue.
“A little sunshine certainly wouldn’t hurt. But we still train on fields that are in excellent condition. And I think that no one would have had the intention of taking a dip at the beach anyway [laughs],” Schär explained.
The newspaper says Switzerland manager Murat Yakin has less than 72 hours to pick his final squad, and the Newcastle defender is likely to make this list. Both Yakin and the Magpies star’s focus will be on the friendly against Estonia later today.
Schär has been a regular under Eddie Howe, as he finished the recently concluded season with 47 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle.
