Deciding to move on from Roy Hodgson, Crystal Palace wasted no time in appointing Oliver Glasner as their next manager.
The Austrian has enjoyed a mixed start to his first three games in charge, winning his first against Burnley, losing the next against Tottenham and then drawing against Luton Town before the international break, during which he has spoken to Kicker, relayed by Laola1.
The manager opened up about his decision to choose Crystal Palace as his next club after leaving Eintracht Frankfurt, and he revealed what he said to those in charge at Selhurst Park in talks showcasing the ambition he has.
He said: “I told the people in charge that if it’s okay for them to continue to finish 16th or 17th and not get relegated, then I’m the wrong manager for that. I don’t want to maintain the status quo. I want to develop something without tying it to a spot.”
As for why he chose a club like Crystal Palace, he made it clear that while trophies are nice, they aren’t what drive him as a manager, and he feels more fulfilled somewhere where he ‘can help shape something’.
The 49-year-old continued: “At the end of the day, winning this or that title is not so important to me. I derive more personal satisfaction from making the people in and around the club happy. That’s what sticks. That’s why I want to be a manager.
“Trophies tend to come last, they are nice, yes, but it’s the journey there that’s special. These moments, this feeling of happiness, that’s what drives me.”
Prior to taking on the job at Crystal Palace, Glasner had been a manager at LASK after being their director of football, before moving onto VfL Wolfsburg in Germany, which paved the way to his move to Eintracht Frankfurt.
It was during the 2021-22 season that he led the Bundesliga club to the Europa League final, beating Rangers 6-5 on penalties after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
