When Tottenham sent Harry Winks on loan to Sampdoria, they threw the midfielder in at the deep end, since he had never played anywhere other than Spurs in his career.
The beginning of his adventure in Italy was a painful one, however, as he struggles with ankle issues, which led him to have to undergo surgery on the issue.
The Tottenham midfielder is now back, and has been one of their best performers over the past few games, even if results haven’t followed.
Sampdoria currently sit bottom of the league, a good 12 points behind 17th placed Spezia, and there is a very good chance, with 12 games to go, that they will be relegated to Serie B.
Hope remains, though, and Harry Winks still doesn’t know whether he will be a Tottenham player next season, despite there not being a purchase clause in the deal with the Italian side.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, he said: “I have a loan contract until June. I’m satisfied with this experience. I don’t know what my future will be after June and I don’t even think about it now. I’m only looking at the next match, but I was pleased to have made this choice last year, I’m proud of it.”
As for whether he has been in touch with Antonio Conte, the current Tottenham manager, he said: “No one from Tottenham has contacted me, not even the manager. I was and remain totally focused on Sampdoria.”
Winks’ future could really depend on whether the Italian coach remains at the helm in London next season, as an exit from Conte would lead to a managerial change.
In turn, whoever replaces him could decide he wants Winks in his squad.
