Aston Villa’s Ian Maatsen is ‘disappointed’ to have been left out of the Netherlands squad for this month’s international break, according to Voetbal Primeur.
In the summer window, the 22-year-old left Chelsea and completed a permanent move to Aston Villa.
The left-back has made three substitute appearances for Aston Villa this season. Oranje manager Ronald Koeman hasn’t included him in the squad to face Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany in the UEFA Nations League.
Instead, the Aston Villa player has been included in the Netherlands U21 squad. Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, the fullback expressed his disappointment over being left out of the senior squad.
“A bit disappointing, but I’m here now. I just have to do my best to get back to Oranje as soon as possible,” he said.
When asked if he had contact with the manager, Maatsen explained: “No, not yet.”
Maatsen was intially left out of the squad, before receiving a late callup from Koeman for the Euro 2024. He finished the tournament without making an appearance and is still waiting to make his debut for the Netherlands.
Speaking to ESPN NL, relayed by Voetbal International, the Aston Villa fullback admitted that he doesn’t understand Koeman’s decision to leave him out of the squad for the two matches this month.
“There must be reasons for it. I wouldn’t actually know. No idea. Actually, I don’t get it. But anyway, we’re here now so it’s up to me to show that I belong in the first [team],” Maatsen explained.
