Yerson Mosquera joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Colombian side Atlético Nacional in 2021 and made his first team debut for the English club in their EFL Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in September of that year.
It has been the 21-year-old’s only appearance for Wolves’ senior team as a hamstring injury forced him to spend most part of the 2021/22 season away from the pitch.
Since regaining full fitness in February 2022, the centre-back has made nine appearances for Wolves U21 side. In need of more game time and prominence, Julen Lopetegui’s side let him join FC Cincinnati on a loan deal last month.
Caracol Radio interviewed the Colombian, where he was asked whether he regrets leaving Atlético Nacional for Wolves in 2021 at a young age.
Responding to that, he said: “I do not regret it. I was excited to continue at Nacional, to continue contributing and every time I played it was as if it were my last game.”
“I feel that these things help to grow when you are young, because you realise foreign football is very demanding and that you have to be also very responsible in every sense. I don’t regret leaving young, because that has helped me grow too. It will be time to face things in the best way, with the head held high and continue working for the opportunity, both in the national team and in the Premier League.”
An injury hampered Mosquera’s progress at Wolves and several months on the sidelines made it difficult for him to cement a place at the Molineux. The defender hopes to enjoy more game time with the MLS side so that he could regain form and confidence.
“MLS has seen by many people in the world and it is a league that is competitive, it can be said that it is very good in terms of sports, it could contribute a lot to the club throughout the world,” Mosquera explained.
“Defensive issue, I think having the chance to play here, I will arrive with more confidence than I had, because it is a fundamental factor to regain confidence in the game, confidence in training where one can play without pressure is not the same.
“The Premier League demands all this and, in the MLS, I will be able to develop that theme and I will be able to carry it out in the best way to return to the Premier League in the not too distant future.”
On his dream to represent Colombia, Mosquera said: “It is a dream that all the players have, to be able to wear the national team’s jersey and mine is clear, mine is to have the necessary number of minutes, to be able to play when the team needs me and give 100%. I’ve always wanted to go and I’ve always been available, I’ve been well and training and I just have to wait for them to give me the opportunity, with God’s help it can come and I’ll be preparing for that.”
