Sweden chief Kim Källström has insisted he hasn’t contacted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer yet, giving hope to Rangers should they be considering him for Ibrox.
Fotboll Skanalen cover comments from him today as the race for the Sweden jobs hots up, and crosses over with Rangers occasionally. Jon Dahl Tomasson was sacked this week with Sweden bottom of their World Cup qualifying group.
A list of names have already been linked with the job. Solskjaer is among them, having been a candidate for the job before Tomasson was appointed. He’s also seemingly on Rangers list at Ibrox. In fact, he was second favourite earlier this week according to the bookmakers.
A report yesterday indicated Sweden might have jumped ahead of them, though. That made it clear that Sweden had already contacted Solskjaer about the vacant role. According to the same report, Solskjaer was at the top of the list of candidates being looked at.
Rangers have clear route should they want
That’s new to Källström, though. He’s insisted that there’s been no contact with the Rangers target for the time being.
“I do not want to speculate on that,” he said.
“It has been quite a while since we made the decision to move on from Jon. But it is clear that intensive work is underway. We know that we have a fairly short timeline before we present the next men’s squad.
“Our goal is to find the best-suited person to lead our men’s national team. The main task is to win matches.”
He was then asked specifically about Solskjaer and poured cold water on the rumours directly.
“We haven’t. I didn’t even know that,” he said about the Norwegian being contacted.
“We are in a period where there will be speculation about an incredible number of names. This is a question that concerns many and there are many who have an opinion about who should be the national team coach. There will be an enormous amount of media information.”
