In the winter market, Cedric Soares left Southampton and joined Inter Milan on loan until the end of the season.

The Saints wanted to bring in a replacement for the Portugal international and in January, we covered a report from Het Belang van Limburg, who explained the Premier League club even submitted a bid for Genk’s Joakim Maehle.

Unfortunately for the English side, no deal took shape and the 21-year-old continued with the Jupiler Pro League club.

The Dane sat down for an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws and revealed he’s happy that Genk knocked back firm interest from Southampton.

“The interest was very concrete and I was charmed, but Genk immediately said there could be no question of a transfer now,” Maehle told HLN.

“I interpreted that interest primarily as a firm pat on the back. ‘Joakim, you’re on the right track.’ It was the best choice to stay with Racing Genk.”

Even though the defender admitted he is happy to have stayed with his current employer, Maehle has not ruled out a move to England in the future.

Asked if his next destination will be England, the player said: “I think that with my athletic playing style I would fit well into the Premier League.”
