Aston Villa target Gabriel Sara is clearly enjoying the confidence boost of what he himself describes as a “magical” year.

Villa have been linked with the Galatasaray player in recent weeks, and the latest interview from the Brazilian only reinforces why clubs continue to follow him so closely ahead of the summer window.

Sara finished the season with six goals and five assists in 39 matches, while being used in several different midfield roles throughout the campaign.

Speaking to Globo Esporte after helping Galatasaray win another Turkish league title, Sara reflected on a season that has taken him from Turkish football to the Brazil national team setup and, potentially, into Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad.

The midfielder admitted the dream of representing Brazil at the 2026 World Cup is now firmly on his mind.

“Playing in a World Cup for Brazil is every player’s dream. It has been a childhood dream for me,” he said.

“I worked very hard this season thinking about that, but I keep my feet on the ground. The manager will pick whoever he thinks is best. If I’m there, I’ll give everything. If not, I’ll support Brazil like I always have.”

Sara also admitted there is growing tension around Ancelotti’s final squad selection.

“There’s huge expectation and even some anxiety to know who will be in the squad. I try to live one day at a time so I don’t become anxious.”

Aston Villa target talks up versatility

One part of the interview may particularly catch Aston Villa’s attention. Sara explained he sees himself as a player capable of operating almost anywhere across midfield and even out wide.

That flexibility has become increasingly valuable in modern squads, especially for clubs competing across multiple competitions.

“Whenever a manager has put me in a different position, I’ve tried to learn as much as possible,” he explained.

“I’ve played at right-back, left-back, as a holding midfielder, box-to-box midfielder, No.10 and winger. I think only centre-back, striker and goalkeeper are missing”, he joked.

The comment sums up why coaches tend to trust him in different tactical systems. And that could be important for Unai Emery. A ‘trade-off’ with Galatasaray involving Emiliano Buendía is reportedly a possibility, so his versatility would be key to replace the Argentine’s abilities.

The Brazilian then expanded further on the mindset behind that versatility.

“My focus has always been helping the team. If I need to defend for the whole game as a full-back, I’ll do it. If I need to attack all the time as a midfielder or winger, I’ll also do it in the best way possible.”

He then summed it up even more directly.

“I think that versatility can even help with the national team because I can play as a 6, 8, 10 and even out wide.”

“Magical” season and Champions League ambition

Sara also described this campaign as the strongest of his career so far. The former Norwich City player has featured in Champions League matches, broken into the Brazil setup and helped Galatasaray secure another title under major pressure.

According to the midfielder, those experiences pushed him to another level.

“I think I’m living the best moment of my career,” he said.

“Because of the level of competition I faced this season, from the Champions League to the Brazil national team, I feel I’m at my peak so far.”

Sara specifically mentioned facing clubs like Liverpool and Atlético de Madrid during the campaign, alongside his experience with Brazil against France.

There is also a growing feeling that the midfielder now looks far more mature and complete than the player English football previously saw at Norwich City.

The technical quality was already there in the Championship, but this season appears to have added another layer of confidence and tactical maturity.

The emotional side of Galatasaray’s title win also clearly left a mark on him. “It was magical,” Sara said.

“For me, it was my second league title and my third trophy since arriving in Turkey. For the club, it was the fourth consecutive title, something that hadn’t happened since 1997 to 2000.”

“The supporters were completely crazy with expectation. We carried some of that pressure because we wanted to make people’s dream come true.”

Still, when talking about personal milestones, the Aston Villa target made it clear he believes there is far more to come.

“I’m happy, but not satisfied. I still feel I have a lot left to give and a lot of room to improve”, he said.

“I dream not only of playing in the Champions League, but also winning the Champions League. I dream of playing in the World Cup, but my dream is to win it.”

That means Aston Villa’s Champions League push could trigger the signing of a brilliant player in the summer.
