Helmond Sport forward Eros Maddy has confirmed he could have joined Leeds United in 2019 but elected for FC Utrecht’s youth squad because of a “feeling” about the Dutch club.
Maddy is a product of the Ajax youth system, having joined them from Sparta Youth in 2014 before working his way up the various ranks at the Dutch giants.
He went on to play for their U17s, U19s and U21 sides but never managed an appearance for the first team, instead leaving for Utrecht’s U21s on a free transfer in 2019 instead of Leeds.
He went on to make 50 appearances for them and two in the first team set up before he again found himself on the move in July this year when he was allowed to join Helmond Sport on a free transfer.
That saw him take a step down into the Keuken Kampioen Divisie to continue his development, but it seems things could have been very different, as Leeds were an option three years ago.
“In 2019, I made the switch to FC Utrecht, but I had also held talks with Leeds United at the time,” he told Voetbal Zone.
“Although I don’t know exactly how concrete they were. However, my feeling at FC Utrecht was good right away.
“The fact that it was close to home was also nice. Hence my choice fell on that at the time.”
