With Brazilian football stars normally leaving the country at a young age, we’ve seen in the past couple of decades some kind of distancing between fans and the national team, as there’s no big identification with the players who are wearing the yellow jersey.
There are some, however, who can break that situation. Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison is the most recent examples of it, as he shows huge love for the Seleção and his personality has been more than enough to draw affection from people in Brazil.
At the weekend, the player revealed that he donates 10% of his salary to a charity institution, and that was one more reason for him to be praised in his country.
So as UOL journalist Menon today writes about Richarlison and the injury he suffered during Tottenham’s match at the weekend, he points out that despite not following the national team, he actually ‘roots’ for the 25-year-old.
“And most of all, I root for Richarlison. For how he plays on the pitch and for the citizen he is. The human being who has taken a stand many times for social causes, protesting against blackouts in Amapá and donating part of his salary to the Padre Roberto Lettieri Institute, for cancer treatment, in Barretos. I was moved to see Richarlison on crutches making a diagnosis as harsh as it was cruel about his chances of going to the Qatar Cup. The race against time is tough. It takes 35 days to cure the calf problem. Tite would take him injured, as he did with Fred in 2018. My current support is all for Richarlison. If he’s on the field, it’s easier to root for Tite’s team.”
Richarlison, however, today received some happy news, as after being examined by Tottenham’s doctors, it was found out he’s likely to be sidelined for only two weeks, and therefore the World Cup dream remains alive.
