Hull City won’t be keeping Gustavo Puerta, as reported by journalist Pipe Sierra and echoed by César Luis Merlo. The Colombian midfielder is heading back to Bayer Leverkusen.

Sierra explains that the Tigers had triggered their option to buy him, but the deal hit a wall because of the transfer ban currently restricting the club.

That ruling has been a huge setback for Hull City, who recently saw their appeal only partially upheld – the punishment was reduced but still blocks them from paying transfer or loan fees until next summer.

The 21-year-old midfielder had shown plenty of promise during his loan spell, with his energy and work rate in midfield catching the eye. Hull were keen to keep him, but the situation left them with no choice but to let him return to Germany.

Back at Leverkusen, the door isn’t closed on another move. Sierra says there are already clubs interested, and the Bundesliga side could well cash in. What comes next for Puerta is still up in the air.
