Jonathan Varane said goodbye to his Sporting Gijón teammates on Thursday evening, and El Comercio picture him smiling whilst handing out a hug to Nacho Mendez.

The midfielder has spent all week being on the verge of a move to Queens Park Rangers, and El Comercio, the Spanish club’s local newspaper, say things have taken longer than expected.

QPR and Sporting Gijón are still to finalise their agreement, although it’s thought they’re just haggling over minor details and the move shouldn’t take too long from now.

Sporting Gijón have wanted €1.5m, and it’s expected QPR will pay very close to that for Varane. The player himself is keen on a move to the Championship club a chance to play in. English football.

What may have slowed things down a little is that Sporting Gijón presented three new signings themselves on Thursday, so that situation has been taking some of their attention away from the outgoing deal.

El Comercio end by saying ‘if nothing goes wrong’ as the deal is wrapped up, and it would be usual for it to collapse now, then Varane will sign a four year contract with QPR.
