About ten days ago, when Portuguese newspaper Record came up with a front page story saying Chelsea had placed a bid for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres, many reports from England rubbished the claims.
There was some insistence from the London press that the Blues never put that amount of money on the table, regardless of what was said in Lisbon.
Well, Record stuck with their information back then, and as they today write about Sporting’s market, they restate that Chelsea did attempt the signing of Gyokeres.
The outlet has had it ‘reaffirmed’ that the Blues offered €80m plus €5m in bonuses to ‘immediately’ take the striker to Stamford Bridge.
It’s said Chelsea received several denials from Sporting, as the Portuguese club are prioritising their campaign on the pitch. They’re top of the league table, hoping that the monetary income they’ll have at the end of the season will pay off their current decisions.
All the resistance Sporting are putting up in January should be gone by the summer, though. The Lions know they have big potential in their squad and will work to break some records with sales by the end of the season. That’s probably when Chelsea should try for Gyokeres again.
