Signed on loan by Napoli in January, Aston Villa’s Leander Dendoncker has only played for 21 minutes in Italy since his arrival.
He hasn’t been injured, but what has happened is a change of manager, as Walter Mazzarri was sacked and replaced by Francesco Calzona until the end of the season.
This, according to Il Mattino, relayed by Tutto Napoli, is why the Aston Villa loanee is not playing, and is also the reason he will be heading back to Villa Park in the summer.
The newspaper are straight to the point, as they state the Serie A side have ‘already made it known’ they will not be triggering the €9m option to buy in the deal.
In fact, he is firmly persona non grata at Napoli these days, because Calzona ‘will never play him’ unless there is some sort of emergency.
It’s made clear that this is ‘not out of spite’, but mostly because he hasn’t played enough and doesn’t have the fitness required.
Despite the Aston Villa man’s attempts of having a chat with Calzona and his assistant to try and find another role he could feature him, it simply is ‘not a question of tactics’.
