West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paquetá has shared his disappointment after the sudden dismissal of Filipe Luís at Flamengo – a development that adds a new twist to the player’s January move away from the London club.

Paquetá joined Flamengo during the winter transfer window in a deal worth around £18m (€21m), becoming the most expensive signing in Brazilian football history. However, the midfielder has now revealed that Filipe Luís was central to convincing him to return to Rio de Janeiro.

Writing on social media on Wednesday, the former West Ham player made clear how much the coach meant to his decision.

“How I wish all those dreams we dreamed together had been fulfilled. I want to thank you for everything you did to bring me back. Without a doubt, you were the biggest reason for it.”

He continued: “Your loyalty, dedication and love for what you do will always be an example for all of us. As a Flamengo supporter, thank you for all the achievements that no one will ever erase.”

Filipe Luís pushed for Paquetá deal

According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Filipe Luís was heavily involved in Flamengo’s transfer decisions and personally pushed the club’s board to invest in Paquetá once the midfielder showed interest in returning.

The coach had a strong influence on recruitment during his time in charge. Therefore, his backing played a key role in convincing Flamengo’s hierarchy to complete the signing.

That makes the timing of his dismissal particularly striking.

Despite leading Flamengo to an emphatic 8-0 victory over Madureira in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final, the club decided to sack the manager shortly afterwards. He returned to the training ground the following day to say goodbye to players and was visibly emotional during the farewell.

Next steps for Paquetá

The situation changes the context of Paquetá’s move. The midfielder left West Ham in January with the expectation of working closely with Filipe Luís. Now, only weeks later, the coach who strongly advocated for his return is no longer in charge.

Flamengo have already moved to appoint a replacement. Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim is expected to take charge after arriving in Rio to sign his contract and meet the squad.

Still, Paquetá’s message makes clear the bond between the two. His words suggest the midfielder had hoped the partnership would last far longer.
