Viktor Gyökeres spent over two seasons at Coventry City before leaving them for Sporting in July 2023.

The Championship side initially took the striker on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2021 and made his stay permanent later that year.

Gyökeres impressed for Coventry City, managing 43 goals and 17 assists from over 100 matches. He starred in his final season for the Sky Blues and was involved directly in 34 goals.

The Sweden international had interest from several clubs and the Lions won the battle in the end. Brest were one of the clubs to miss out on the 26-year-old, according to L’Equipe.

Grégory Lorenzi, the Ligue 1 club’s sporting director, has been speaking to the newspaper and the former Coventry City star is mentioned as his ‘possible regret’.

Brest contacted the Swede’s agent, but Coventry City’s demands stopped them from signing the frontman.

“There’s also Viktor Gyökeres. His agent told me that I was the only French sporting director to have called him, when he was at Coventry. I was ready to put in €4-€5m, but it was €8m,” he said.

Gyökeres has scored 77 goals and registered 22 assists from 84 games for the Portuguese club since joining them. He’s been linked to top European clubs, including those from the Premier League, and could leave Sporting in the summer.

It’s no surprise Lorenzi and Brest would regret missing out on the Sporting star.
