Óscar Cortés wasn’t part of Russell Martin’s core plans at Ibrox this season and Rangers sent him on loan to Sporting de Gijón on deadline day.
Rangers initially signed Cortés on loan from FC Metz in February 2024 and later that year, they extended his loan stay for another season before making his stay permanent this summer.
The 21-year-old struggled at Ibrox and was limited to 290 minutes from 11 games last season and 95 minutes from three games under Russell Martin this season. A loan move to the second division Spanish club could help him regain his form and fitness.
El Comercio had a chat with former Rangers and Sporting de Gijón forward Nacho Novo to get his views on the Colombia international’s loan signing in the summer window.
“A good player. He’s fast, good one-on-one, and good at scoring goals. I haven’t been able to see him regularly because of injuries, but I like him. He’s got something,” he said.
The newspaper points out that Novo currently lives in Glasgow and asked him whether he had a chat with the winger before he decided to join the Segunda División side.
When responding to that, Novo has backed the South American to succeed at Rangers in the long run. Cortés has a contract with the Scottish club until 2029.
“No, but I spoke to him a few times when I was here in Glasgow. He’s a very calm kid. Yes, I’d like to speak to him to tell him he’s joined a very big club and to wish him the best, that I’m sure he’ll have a good season. He’s a bet for the future for Rangers, and I think he’ll succeed at Sporting. He’s going to do well,” Novo explained.
