Former AC Milan and Fiorentina goalkeeper Giovanni Galli has expressed his delight after Tottenham Hotspur star Guglielmo Vicario made his debut for Italy last month.
Galli was a guest on Rai Radio 1’s Radio Anch’io Sport and talked about several topics, including the 27-year-old’s long road to success. His comments are relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb.
Vicario’s fine displays for Empoli last season convinced Tottenham to invest in securing his services before the start of this season.
The goalkeeper has started every league fixture for Spurs and has impressed so far. He received his first call-up in September 2022 but had to wait until March 24th to make his first appearance for Azzurri.
Vicario is a product of Udinese’s academy and initially had spells in the lower divisiosn before being a regular in the top flight since the start of the 2021/22 season, when he moved to Empoli.
Galli is of the belief the Tottenham stopper went through a lot before reaching the top.
On Vicario’s debut with the national team, he said: “I’m happy, I recognise that Donnarumma is a great goalkeeper. But when I see the elegance, the personality, the figure of Vicario, my heart opens.
“Donnarumma is imposing and doesn’t let you see the goal behind, Vicario, on the other hand, is a really good figure, he pleases the eye, he’s elegant. I’m happy for him.
“If Donnarumma had a highway in front of him, Vicario arrived in Serie A and in blue [Italy] by doing the Via Crucis. He suffered so much and he deserved the call-up and debut in the national team.”
Vicario has kept seven clean sheets and conceded 44 goals from 31 games for Spurs this season.
