Former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi is today highlighted by Portuguese newspaper Record, who gave him their Artur Agostinho award, which is handed out to the best performer of the year.
The 35-year-old gave the outlet a very long interview, where he not only discussed his career, but also talked about some teammates he’s had in past seasons.
One of them is Bernardo Silva, who played with Otamendi at Manchester City and never hid his wish to return to Benfica before the end of his career.
Record first mentioned that the Portuguese midfielder already won the same award, pointing out they used to play together in England.
“I’ve seen. Bernardo shared a dressing room with me at Manchester City. He’s a great person, as well as a great player. It’s clear to see that he’s a footballer of another dimension. I had the chance to be in the same team as him. He’s a very simple person, very quiet and a lot of fun,” said Otamendi.
Record then asked whether Otamendi believes Silva will return to Benfica in the near future, and the Argentine made it clear he wants that to happen.
“Any player who is a fan of the club, and who is as big as Bernardo, it’s always good to share the pitch with him. They’re players who play very good football and who love a club that has given them so much in terms of sport. If he comes back one day, let him come because he’ll be well received.”
Silva recently spoke to the Portuguese media about leaving Manchester City for Benfica, and made it clear that the Eagles would not have the money to pay for his transfer at this stage.
So this continues to be a scenario for the final years of his career.
