Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne’s contract expires in June and without a sign of a renewal, his future beyond this season remains uncertain.

The Belgium international has struggled with injuries since the start of last season. He’s been fit since last October but has been in and out of Manchester City’s starting lineup.

River Plate have been encouraged to make a surprise move to sign the 33-year-old for free in the summer window.

Former River Plate striker Carlos Morete has been speaking to River Monumental and TyC Sports have relayed his comments. He has urged the Argentine club’s official to make a trip to England to try and sign the attacking midfielder.

“River Plate have a manager and brains. Maybe they called and I don’t know, or it wasn’t made public. Why didn’t anyone take a plane to Manchester and go find out about De Bruyne?” he said.

Morete also represented other clubs including UD Las Palmas, Sevilla and Boca Juniors during his playing career. The former River Plate star is of the belief the Manchester City player can help Marcelo Gallardo’s side become a force on the pitch.

“He’s 33 years old. You pay him $20m, he’s free, and see if you can bring him in or not,” Morete explained.

“He’ll make you a champion, make you fight for championships, and solve all your problems. Go check out his physical condition. He’s a real star and he’s not that old. Make him an offer. He’ll leave City for free, pay him $20m a year, and bring him in.

“If you buy a player like the Colombian [Kevin Castaño] or Driussi, you’ve made a mess of millions of dollars. Here, you don’t pay a penny for his transfer, and you’re bringing in a star. Everything River brought doesn’t solve anything.”

If De Bruyne decides to leave Manchester City, it’s unlikely for him prioritise a move to South America.
