This week, the Danish media has been making a lot of noise about Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg captaining the national team for the first time.
It was his 75th appearance representing his country, so starting the match against the Faroe Islands with the armband certainly meant a lot to him.
Local outlet Bold now shares a story with Højbjerg talking about that achievement. There, the Tottenham player expressed his feelings.
“I am proud and today my heart is filled with joy,” said Højbjerg.
“It is the most important shirt for me in my career and my life. This is the national team shirt. It is of course great to have ‘a few’ matches in it and then tie it around your arm.”
Even though Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen came on during the match, Højbjerg did not give him the armband, and used the interview to explain why he didn’t want to share it with him.
“Of course I didn’t. If it’s my turn, then it’s my turn. The others will be allowed next time (laughs).
Denmark went unbeaten in this international break, as they first had a 0-0 draw against Switzerland and now managed to win the Faroe Islands 2-0.
They also have a couple of games against Sweden and Norway before they finally go to the Euro, where they play Slovenia, England and Serbia in the group stages.
Tottenham will be back in action on Saturday, when they play Luton Town in the Premier League, still in the fight for a place in the Champions League next season.
