Between 2012 and 2014, Brazil legend Julio Cesar had a short spell at Queens Park Rangers.
He came to the London club having won multiple major accolades – including the Champions League in 2010. At that point, he was seen as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet and the move to QPR surprised many.
QPR were in the Premier League at that point but finished 20th, incurring massive losses.
Julio Cesar played regularly in the 2012/13 season but things fell apart in the next campaign. His son – Cauet Werner, who is playing his trade with Messina, has opened up about the time at Queens Park Rangers.
Cesar’s mistreatment at QPR
The youngster spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport in a detailed interview and was specifically asked about his time in London.
He revealed his father’s frustrations, saying: “In 2013, after his first season at QPR, he was dropped from the club and never played. The best goalkeeper in the world was forced to sit in the stands. He was suffering, because a year before the World Cup, he had lost confidence and consistency.”
Werner, who has his mother’s surname, said his father ended training in a Toronto park.
“We moved to Toronto and started training in the park, just him and me. I kicked, dad dived. I was 11 years old. He trusted me. In the end, he started the 2014 World Cup alongside Scolari. It was a shame about that 7-1 semi-final defeat against Germany.”
QPR move was always strange
The transfer to Loftus Road was always strange. The club had barely survived relegation in the 2011/12 season despite spending a hefty amount in the market.
Besides, the Brazilian was only 32 at that point and that is generally quite young for a goalkeeper.
It’s perhaps something the legend now regrets. Even if he did have a good spell at Benfica from 2014 onwards, the spell at QPR was clearly a waste of everyone’s time.
