Two days ago, we covered claims from the Dutch press which stated Ajax wanted to sign Manchester United’s Christian Eriksen.
The midfielder was at the Eredivisie side between 2008 and 2013, of which the first two years were with their academy.
Ajax considered bringing the 32-year-old back to the club in the recently concluded window. This has now been revealed by the Dutch club’s sporting director, Alex Kroes.
Speaking to Ajax TV, relayed by ESPN NL, Kroes explains why a deal for the Manchester United player didn’t materialise before Monday’s deadline in the Netherlands.
“He was definitely on the list, on the long list. A boy from the club, experience, routine and a good footballer. Ultimately, we were unable to create space for this due to various circumstances,” he said.
Earlier this week, Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots told Voetbal International that the Dane turned down multiple clubs to stay at Manchester United. The agent had also revealed that there were informal contacts with Anderlecht.
The Jupiler Pro League side have until Friday [Belgium deadline] to make new additions to their squad. Het Laatste Nieuws claim Anderlecht have now ended their interest in the midfielder.
Eriksen has less than a year left on his contract and has been limited to only four minutes of action this season. The Denmark international’s agent remains optimistic his client will be able to feature regularly at Manchester United this season, but a January exit, and move to Ajax, is obviously a possibility.
