Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has played down a rivalry with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, admitting Cole Palmer has spoken to his former teammate about it.
The full-back has been speaking to EFE about various topics, which meant the rivalry with Haaland was brought up.
Their rivalry started in the summer when Cucurella was winning Euro 2024 with Spain, when the Chelsea man was pictured signing a song dedicated to him but with changed lyrics that claimed Haaland ‘better tremble because Cucurella is coming’.
That was obviously picked up on and became a talking point when Haaland and Cucurella came up against each other when Chelsea hosted Manchester City on the opening day of the Premier League season.
Haaland got the better of the Spaniard in that game, shrugging him off before scoring in the eventual win.
He was later questioned about the rivalry between him and the Chelsea man, joking that he had gone from asking for his shirt to signing songs about him in the space of a few months.
Now Cucurella has had his say and insists it’s all been taken out of context, although Cole Palmer has spoken to his former Manchester City teammate on his behalf.
“There was a lot of talk about that in England too and these are things that happen,” he said.
“I am very happy and I think that if someone sings a song with his name it is because he is a top player or a world star, you would not use the name of a player who was not known.
“Everyone is happy because he scored, and I am still just as happy for winning the Euros. I would do it again, they are things that happen and stay there.
“In the end in England they took it out of context a bit and I don’t think he knew it either. He read what they said and took it a little personally. Nowadays people take things very personal, but then they had some awards, and my partner Palmer asked him about me, and it all ended there. It was just an anecdote.”
