Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães has offered new insight into his growing leadership role with Brazil, and much of it involves a Manchester United figure.

The midfielder spoke at length about Casemiro, the Red Devils’ captain, describing how the veteran shaped both his behaviour and his position inside the national team.

Speaking to Globo Esporte, Guimarães made clear that Casemiro’s influence goes far beyond tactics. “His background, his titles… he is a complete player. His career speaks for itself,” he said.

The midfielder noted that Casemiro’s guidance helped him accept a larger role in the national team. That connection accelerated this year, when Carlo Ancelotti identified Guimarães as one of Brazil’s new leaders.

He explained that the admiration started long before they shared the Brazil dressing room. “In one of my first interviews with the national team in 2020, they asked if I was inspired by someone. I said his name. Casemiro. He is an idol for everything he did.”

For Guimarães, the respect – and the partnership – is also seen in the pitch. “He plays as a number 5, I play as an 8. It matched perfectly, and things are starting to work well.”

The Newcastle United player already carries leadership responsibility at club level, where he took the armband last season. Now he mirrors that dynamic for Brazil, supported by the Manchester United captain who “passed the baton” as part of the team’s new hierarchy.

Brazil will enter the 2026 cycle with several structural changes, but the partnership between two Premier League captains stands out.

Guimarães’ rise continues to attract attention in England, while Casemiro’s mentorship shows how experienced players shape the next group. What comes next depends on Brazil’s run under Ancelotti, yet the influence of both captains is already clear.
