John Carew had quite a memorable spell at Aston Villa before retiring and moving into acting.
He joined the Villans from Lyon in 2007. This came right after he had scored 17 times for the French side, also putting in important performances in the Champions League.
Carew lived up to the expectations in Birmingham, becoming something of a cult hero at Aston Villa.
Acting career launched in Birmingham
Carew, who also had a stint at AS Roma, spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport in an extensive interview. He recalled how the passion for acting first took birth in Birmingham.
The ex-striker said: “In 2009, I was playing for Aston Villa. I was 30. Some of my friends in London worked in the film industry, and one day they said to me, ‘John, you look interesting to be an actor.’ I didn’t believe it at first.”
He revealed he first started taking lessons during his time at Aston Villa.
“Then I convinced myself and started taking courses. Acting allowed me to create a channel to express my emotions.”
The former player also claimed that it was Prince William who convinced him to move to the Premier League side in 2007.
Disclosing some background, he said: “We met in Norway, during a dinner with the royal family. I remember we only talked about football, and shortly afterward, he invited me to England to watch an Aston Villa match, his team. He convinced me to move there in 2007: for three consecutive seasons, I scored double figures in the Premier League.”
Further, Carew pointed out a good bond with Prince William.
“He admired me. In 2019, we watched the play-off final against Derby County together at Wembley, which secured our return to the Premier League.”
At Aston Villa, Carew scored 48 times in 131 appearances and added 12 assists.
