Roberto De Zerbi left Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of last season and took charge of Marseille in June.
The Italian spent close to two seasons at Brighton and helped them qualify for the Europa League for the first time in the club’s history.
De Zerbi wanted to raid The Amex in the summer window for Brighton’s Julio Enciso. This is now confirmed by the attacking midfielder during an interview with Versus.
The 20-year-old claims his former manager tried to bring him to the Ligue 1 side. The deal didn’t take shape, and the player hasn’t explained the reason for it.
“He called me when he went to Marseille, he wanted me, but things didn’t work out. He left me with some very good lessons,” he said.
The Paraguay international played 40 matches for the Seagulls under De Zerbi’s orders, managing four goals and four assists in the process. The coach has left a positive impact on the player.
“He wanted to get the best out of me, he didn’t give me the No. 10 for nothing. He demanded a lot from me, he challenged me when he had to challenge me, he told me when he wanted me,” Enciso explained.
Marseille have enjoyed an impressive start under the Italian. They are unbeaten after four league games and are second in the table, trailing Paris Saint-Germain by two points.
The South American has been limited to 39 minutes from three Premier League games this season. De Zerbi may return for him in the coming windows, if his situation at Brighton doesn’t improve.
