Manchester United have three wins in seven matches this season, including a 7-0 win over third division side Barnsley in the EFL Cup.

The Red Devils had to settle for a 1-1 draw against FC Twente in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Wednesday. The hosts had two more shots [five] on target than the Eredivisie side.

Erik ten Hag’s system and style of play at Manchester United have been questioned for most of this year.

Former Netherlands internationals Ruud Gullit and Theo Janssen have now joined in and given their views on Manchester United’s playing style under Ten Hag.

They were analysing the Europa League tie between the Premier League side and Twente for Ziggo Sport, and their quotes relayed by Voetbal International. Gullit didn’t seem to be surprised with Manchester United’s performance yesterday.

“It’s that one goal comes from a scramble. But in terms of football… And I see this every week. It’s been like this for years,” he said.

Janssen has joined his compatriot in being critical of Manchester United’s style of play under the former Ajax manager.

“How long has this process been going on? There is still no recognisable playing style, in terms of pressing and building up. It is hoping for an individual moment from a player, so that they can create something. That is also the criticism of Ten Hag, that there is nothing recognisable,” Janseen explained.

Gullit, who represented Chelsea during his playing career, has pinned the blame on Ten Hag.

“That is also the criticism of Ten Hag, that there is nothing recognisable. I feel bad for him, because I also want him to succeed. But he brings it on himself,” Gullit added.
