Brighton and Hove Albion star Mats Wieffer has admitted he hasn’t spoken to Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman in five to six months.

Voetbal Primeur report comments from the Brighton man today. He admits that his chances of appearing for the Netherlands seem slim given a lack of contact with Koeman.

Back in vogue at Brighton

Mats Wieffer has put himself in contention for a place int eh Netherlands squad for the World Cup this summer with a late revival at Brighton.

The 26-year-old has been reinvented as a right-back and has now made 21 appearances for the Seagulls in that position this season. In comparison, he’s made just five appearances in his normal defensive midfield spot.

But a position may have opened up in the Netherlands squad in midfield courtesy of a recent injury to Jerdy Schouten. Wieffer, though, insists he has no influence on that.

“First of all, it is of course very sad for him. It really is terrible,” he told Viaplay.

“As for me… I don’t really have any influence on that aspect. Ultimately, I just do my thing.

“I am not currently playing in that six-position, but I think I will be there often. And I have actually played there for almost my entire career. So filling the spot wouldn’t really be a problem in that respect.”

No contact from Koeman

If he were to secure a return to the international set up, the Brighton man would presumably have heard from Ronald Koeman by now.

Instead, it appears that the duo have not spoken since Mats Wieffer put a phone call in five or six months ago.

“Ultimately, the national coach decides what he wants and what he is looking for,” he added.

“I really hope I make the cut. I called him once, five or six months ago. But I haven’t really spoken to him since then.”
